Winter Floral Installation 2022 - July to August

The Fremantle Markets is a beloved community space, cherished by locals and visitors, too.

Whether you are a regular or just dropping in for the first time, the current floral installation has been designed to banish any winter blues and light you up. We thought carefully about which local flowers are flourishing right now, what would last through the winter season and best represent our gorgeous local flora in an uplifting and authentic way.

So we really couldn’t go past the magnificent Banksia Menziesii, an ancient local Protea tree.

This flower was called “Bulgalla” by the Noongar people. Found within 50km of the coast between Pinjarra and Kalbarri, this beautiful bloom was traditionally used to relieve coughs and colds – perfect timing since it flowers during the wettest months. Banksia flowers are a rich and nutritious source of food for many local birds and marsupials too.

If you walk in the local bushland during winter, you will most likely find yourself amongst a little grove of these gnarly beauties. One of their amazing features is that they display their flowers in all sorts of phases at once – so you can see the full spectrum and life-cycle of a banksia flower all happening on the same tree at the same time.

Also on display in our suspended bunches are local tea tree, kangaroo paw, strawflowers and eucalyptus.

We hope you enjoy the flowers during your visit to the markets. Please enjoy these photos of the Banksia by local photographer Neil Wallace, who always supplies us with his range of botanical greeting cards and prints. Get in touch if you would like to order something.
